150 films, 7 days, 6 venues! The British Shorts Film Festival is back in 2024 to present the most exciting, funny, strange and thrilling new short films from the home of bad weather - drama, comedy, thriller, animation, experimental, documentary, horror, science fiction and music videos from the UK and Ireland.
This year's retrospective "Weekender - Memories of Acid House & 90s Rave Scenes" brings together music films, documentaries and video clips that show the origins of the acid house and rave scenes in the UK in the late 1980s and 1990s. In addition to immersive depictions of the music and the associated lifestyles, the focus is on social aspects such as the moral panic caused by the tabloid press and the illegalization of raves by the Conservative British government, which even wanted to ban the public playing of music with "repetitive beats" with the Criminal Justice Act of 1994.
The programme presents various developments such as the free festivals of the Freetekno movement and events by queer party collectives, which consciously distanced themselves from the increasing commercialization of house and techno, and draws a line to the influences that these warehouse raves of the 90s have left on contemporary pop culture.
