A car ride through the desert with the window down.
Graceful surfers gliding through blue waves. A suburban street dimly lit by streetlights. The sun as a large round ball shimmering above a distant horizon - these are just a few of the images conjured up by Brothertiger, the wonderful new album by the Brooklyn-based electro artist of the same name. The album brings together a handful of singles released over the last year and a half, plus several unreleased tracks. It follows John Jagos, also known as Brothertiger, as he moves from his chillwave roots into sophisticated sophisti-pop - a British-born mic genre - to which he remains loyal. Its heyday in the 80s and 90s was marked by major releases from bands such as Prefab Sprout and Scritti Politti. Brothertiger's interpretation of the genre is pure escapism - immaculately constructed, retro-appropriate songs for romantic vagabonds and urban daydreamers alike. They
are probably the most impressive songs Jagos has ever made.
Jagos has already released four albums under the pseudonym Brothertiger
as well as several EPs, a Tears for Fears cover album and a four-part series of live-streamed improvisations called Fundamentals. Nevertheless, he has named his latest album after himself, which is normally reserved for an artist's debut work. But after spending some time with the record's opulent soundscapes and learning how much is personal in its creativity, you understand: the Brothertiger LP is a testament to Jagos' technical prowess, a perfectly orchestrated culmination of his ambitious experimentation and nostalgic obsessions. It also ushers in a new era for a songwriter whose synthpop has often been reduced to being pensive and introspective.
introspective.
