Nipples are banal - or erotic. Normal - or scandalous. Everyday - or a matter of court. What makes the subtle difference is the (ascribed) gender of the person to whom the nipples belong. And it is also this subtle difference that makes the nipple a political issue time and again.
Julia Fritzsche looks back at the history of revealing and exposing the human body in order to draw conclusions about a political struggle today. When did the female breast become erotic, when did shame dominate historically and when did the urge for liberation? Can female nipples be de-scandalized in public space? The outcome of the current battles for #FreeTheNipple remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the way we treat our breasts is political - and it's about more than just bathing regulations.
