Every year, millions of people make a pilgrimage to festivals to lose themselves in escapism, ecstasy and a boundless sense of freedom - and of course in the music. But representation on festival stages? Often remains wishful thinking. In 2025, the festival summer is still characterized by male-dominated line-ups - despite vociferous calls for more visibility for FLINTA* artists. Rike van Kleef examines why this is the case in her book "Billige Plätze". For her research, the author, cultural worker and co-founder of the fæmm association spoke to musicians, bookers and event organizers, among others, and relentlessly reveals the structural barriers in the music industry - from unequal pay and a lack of security to a lack of visibility for queer and female perspectives.
