In the fall of 1994, the inhabitants of the Irish coastal town of Ardglas have only one thing on their minds: Colette Crowley - poet, bohemienne, the woman who left her family to find happiness in Dublin - is back and living in a small cottage on the Coast Road. Every move she makes is eyed suspiciously by the community. Does she deserve to be denied access to her children by her husband? In desperation, Colette asks for help from an acquaintance, Izzy Keaveney, a housewife and mother, unhappily married to a local politician who is campaigning for the legalization of divorce in the country. And so a bond develops between the two very different women that steers their lives in unexpected directions.

In straightforward prose, with psychological sensitivity and great powers of observation, Alan Murrin tells of the social restrictions that determined women's lives in Ireland just thirty years ago - shortly before divorce was legalized by a narrow majority in a referendum - and subtly illuminates what still prevents women all over the world from leaving their partners today.
