With this question, Immanuel Kant sums up the questions of philosophy, and how he answers them will surely spark another fascinating discussion this afternoon. “What can we know? What should we do? And what may we hope for?”—these were the preceding questions, which are to be summarized under the question of what it means to be human. For Kant, a human being is a creature who can speak and is therefore free to decide on his or her own actions—which also gives rise to the first and, to date, only philosophical argument for a human right: the free development of the personality!
