Sensual emotional cinema, based on the subtle screenplay by old master James Ivory (Maurice, Reunion at Howard's End, Room with a View) Northern Italy, 1983: The Perlman family is spending the summer in their sophisticated villa. In a mixture of delightful single-mindedness, youthful overconfidence and overplayed shyness, 17-year-old Elio approaches Oliver, an archaeology doctoral student specializing in Roman cultural history, whom his father has hired for the season.
