Love, passion, unfulfilled expectations and beguiling music: these are the ingredients of Bizet's world-famous Carmen, first performed in Paris in 1875.
Her protagonist is the femme fatale par excellence - a wild, seductive woman, a projection screen for male fantasies. But she says it clearly: nothing is more valuable to her than her own freedom, which ultimately drives her lover Don José to despair.
Initially only moderately acclaimed, Carmen, based on the novella by Prosper Merimée, quickly gained international popularity. It has long been one of the most frequently performed operas - and can be seen again in Münster in 2024 in a new production after ten years!
