CAUGHT BY THE TIDES by Jia Zhang-Ke was in competition at Cannes last year. Director Jia Zhang-ke is the cinematic chronicler of modern China. In his latest work, his muse Zhao Tao travels through a country on the move between 2001 and 2023. Her character, the model Qiaoqiao, is searching for Brother Bin, who left the provincial town of Datong to make a career as a businessman.
