Christof Thewes Quartet

In the organizer's words:

Christof Thewes - trombone ,comp.
Hartmut Oßwald - baritone, tenor saxophone
Ben Lehmann - double bass
Martial Frenzel - drums

Trombonist Christof Thewes has been musically active for years as the leader and composer of countless ensembles of his own - covering everything from solo to big band - and as a sideman with such well-known groups as the Globe Unity Orchestra and the Uli Gumpert Workshop Band. In more than 30 years he has performed with many well-known and legendary jazz musicians such as Alex Schlippenbach, Evan Parker, Rudi Mahall, Albert Mangelsdorff, Gerd Dudek, Paul Lovens and many others throughout Europe, Central and North America and Canada, recording more than 40 CDs and developing an unmistakable sound in the process.

Known primarily as a soloist in free and experimental contexts, Thewes has always maintained a strong connection to the jazz tradition, as in his latest project, the Christof Thewes Quartet. With the musicians Hartmut Oßwald (reeds), Benjamin Lehmann (bass) and Martial Frenzel (drums) - all old musical companions and well-rehearsed - this newly founded ensemble refers to the long tradition of quartet formations without harmony instruments, as founded by Gerry Mulligan in the early 50s with Bob Brookmeyer and Chet Baker and continued by Ornette Coleman in the 60s and Anthony Braxton in the 80s.

Referring to the jazz standards collection of the "American Songbook", known to all jazz musicians as the "Real Book" and revered as a bible of good taste, the musicians of the C.TH. Quartet have compiled a collection of pieces in many rehearsals and concerts, which consists exclusively of Thewes' own compositions and which - about 200 pieces in number - have been written over the last 35 years: the Surrealbook. For each concert, an extra set list is created from this collection of pieces, often spontaneously on stage, making each concert an original, exciting, spontaneous and improvised experience.

The band performs acoustically, but musically uses everything that (popular) music has to offer: swing alongside rock, New Orleans alongside free jazz, collective alongside solo, strenuous alongside light, musical anarchy alongside formal rigor... but above all, the band serves a crucial musical tradition, that of humour.
