15:30 Kalima & Wiening - La Santa Muerte

The figure of La Santa Muerte ("Saint Death") plays an important role, especially in Mexican Christian folklore. She is a female skeleton with a scythe, often wearing a red, white, green and black cloak and a crown on her skull. People often hope for love, luck, protection and health from La Santa Muerte and sacrifice roses, cigars or even tequila to her. Berlin-based Finnish guitarist Kalle Kalima and Cologne-based drummer Mareike Wiening have named their duo after this cult. Together they fuse their instruments, guitar and drumset, into an emotional, powerful unit. Their music is bursting with energy and intensity, it is free and unbound and sounds as if it wants to ignite the passion of experimental rock in jazz: ritualistic and spiritual at the same time.

17:00 Companion Songs

Guitarist and singer Marco Mlynek and drummer Max Andrzejewski have known each other since their teenage years, when they made their first attempts as musicians together in the rehearsal room. Even though their musical paths diverged afterwards, they remained close friends. When the world went into lockdown in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, with everyone thrown back on themselves, Mlynek recorded the first sketches for the later "Companion Songs" - like logbook entries without a project goal, like songs as companions, according to the principle: "First thought, best thought." These sketches then went back and forth between him and Andrzejewski until they were completed as "Companion Songs" - with angular, interlaced guitar sounds, with influences from math rock and kraut rock, honest, energetic, authentic sounding.
