Y-Otis

The Swedish expat in Berlin, tenor saxophonist Otis Sandsjö, often describes the music of his quartet Y-OTIS with Petter Eldh (bass, synthesizer), Dan Nicholls (keyboards, synthesizer) and Jamie Peet (drums) as "liquid jazz". For him, there are neither aesthetic nor stylistic boundaries; his music flows in many directions and opens itself up to the "anything goes" of post-modernism as a matter of course. When the bass and synthesizer penetrate the deepest depths of the perceptible frequency range, when breakbeats are drummed at breakneck speed on the drums and the tenor saxophone drives tonal streaks into the loud inferno with fading sounds and split tones, it has more of a technoid rave than a serious jazz concert. And that's a good thing, you might think, and you'll be overjoyed at how much fun it is to plunge headlong into this acoustic maelstrom and let yourself be whirled around by this boundless and boundless music.

Matti Nives

Born in Helsinki in 1980, Matti Nives is the founder and creative head of We Jazz, one of the most exciting European labels at the moment, which released the latest album by Otis Sandsjö's Y-Otis, who can be heard on the same evening at Cologne Jazzweek. In addition to groundbreaking releases, Nives produces the quarterly magazine of the same name and runs his own record store in Helsinki. He also hosts a regular jazz program on Radio Helsinki. He will be putting together one of his legendary DJ sets in Cologne from his extensive eclectic record collection.
