Alexander Chance won the International Handel Singing Competition in London in 2022, where he was the first countertenor ever to be honored. For a British artist, lute songs by John Dowland are naturally both standard repertoire and a touchstone. In them, the composer unites a whole spectrum of emotions ranging from love, heartache and melancholy to despair and sadness. With his pure, silky timbre and flawless vocal line, Alexander Chance captures the sensual, melancholic and tender character of these songs so perfectly that Gramophone Magazine has already certified that he can lay claim to the title of the most exciting British countertenor of his generation. Together with Fretwork and lutenist Kristiina Watt, the unique timelessness of these songs becomes palpable and it seems almost impossible not to be deeply moved by this bittersweet music ...
