As part of our seasonal theme "Controversial!", musical worlds collide - in this case those of Arnold Schoenberg and Dimitri Shostakovich. Two witty and ironic orchestral works by Shostakovich, who considered Schoenberg's idea of twelve-tone music to be a "meaningless game with sounds", are presented. One is the Suite for Variety Orchestra, which became famous as "Jazz Suite No. 2". The second is his Symphony No. 15, which takes a colorful journey through music history with echoes of Rossini and Wagner. Schönberg's String Trio op. 45, on the other hand, is an impressively complex work - and yet full of expressivity.
