COSMO SHELDRAKE

There are good reasons why Cosmo Sheldrake's music sounds the way it does. His father, Rupert Sheldrake, is a biologist and comes from a long line of church organists. His mother, Jill Purce, whose own mother was a concert pianist, inspired a revival of group singing, teaches Mongolian overtone singing, and worked for four years with German avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. So from an early age, Sheldrake grew up in a world of unconventional music, between electronic and analog sounds, between whale songs and bird calls. All of this shows up in his music. It is certainly also helpful that the Briton collects instruments from the guitar and banjo, keyboards, bass and double bass, drums, tin whistle, sousaphone to the accordion and also masters a variety of them. Thus he combines field recordings, natural soundscapes, his vocals and variable instrumentation to create enormously original music. Sheldrake has already been called "genuinely great British eccentric", which is true in a pleasant and excellent way. His music is truly unique, seems very organic and never contrived despite the approach. But the best thing about it is: these tracks also work splendidly live. You can see this for yourself when Cosmo Sheldrake finally comes back on tour in May to present his new album, which will be released before the shows.
