How our daughter helped us to see the world with new eyes
When their daughter Pauli was born with a severe visual impairment, Josefine Gauck and her husband decided to try something unusual: they took their three children on a one-year trip to show Pauli as much of the world as possible - before her eyesight deteriorated completely. At the beginning, her eyesight is around seven percent, and no one can say how long it will stay that way.
The family swaps planning for spontaneity, lives in a camper van, works on organic farms and tends houses with pets. They encounter people, landscapes and animals - every experience becomes valuable, every picture precious. Pauli experiences freedom in the treetops of a Canadian climbing forest, while milking goats and in the open sea.
With great sensitivity and impressive storytelling, Josefine Gauck describes in her book "Mal gucken" how a life-changing diagnosis becomes a source of strength - for the whole family. A touching story about courage, solidarity and consciously experiencing moments.
Josefine Gauck, born in Rostock in 1986, is the granddaughter of former German President Joachim Gauck. She left the GDR with her parents in 1988 and grew up in Hamburg. After studying medicine, marrying and having two children, her third child was born with a visual impairment. She then trained as a yoga and breathing teacher, emergency counselor and child and youth coach. She lives with her family in Hamburg.
As part of the "Dacheröden on Tour" series, Kultur: Haus Dacheröden regularly invites people to talk about their very different journeys and experiences abroad. Be it daring adventures, profound encounters or inspiring experiences - the talks bring the world to Erfurt and awaken the desire to discover.
