What do we feel when we feel? The great writer Virginia Woolf once wrote of "unclassified affections, of which there are so many".

The quartet of New York drummer Dan Weiss reveals to us that these can be felt not only towards people, but also towards music. On his current album "Unclassified Affections", he shows himself to be strongly influenced by classical literature. Similar to this, his compositions also create vast spaces of consciousness. Behind every door you open, a new one awaits. A never-ending labyrinth of layers of meaning. It is not for nothing that Jazz Trail wrote of Weiss' "rare ability to tell stories with music"

The top-class quartet is completed by Peter Evans on trumpet, Miles Okazaki on guitar and Patricia Brennan on vibraphone. The latter first wowed audiences with a solo set at the 49th Leipzig Jazz Days in 2025. When playing together, the band constantly alternates between rhythmic sophistication and melodic grace. Sometimes it follows a stringent compositional theme, sometimes it improvises wildly, free from external attributions. In this respect, it is not only the affection for the music that proves to be unclassifiable - but also the music itself.
