Why do characters act the way they do? And to what extent are they shaped by their surroundings? Is it possible to tell a character’s story without giving space to their external circumstances? Opinions on this question are divided, but the fact remains: Every story is caught between two forces—the self and others. In this writing workshop, we’ll therefore explore psychological and sociological storytelling—that is, inner conflicts, relationships, expectations, and social pressure. After familiarizing ourselves with the theoretical foundations and examining well-known examples, we’ll use practical exercises and brief prompts to explore what drives people from within and from without, and how this gives rise to multi-layered characters and believable conflicts.Sociological and Psychological Storytelling Please register individually so that an email address can be assigned to each registration.
