Das KoKi zeigt: Ein einfacher Unfall

Iranian Eqbal (Ebrahim Azizi) is traveling by car at night with his wife and daughter. After a collision with a dog, he has to go to a nearby garage. The mechanic Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri) believes he recognizes the man who once tortured him in prison. Driven by a desire for revenge, he kidnaps his supposed tormentor. When he protests his innocence, Vahid contacts several other victims of Eqbal to help him confirm his suspicions. Director Jafar Panahi, himself persecuted by the Iranian regime for many years, uses his own experiences in his film to create a parable about opposition movements and how they deal with the terror of state power. It is about guilt and atonement and the question of whether one should kill out of revenge or show mercy. Panahi also paints a complex picture of Iranian society. He shows women who walk through the streets without headscarves but then quickly have them to hand when the authorities approach. When the same authorities are appeased by an appropriate baksheesh and are happy to accept payment by card if there is no cash, the suspenseful thriller becomes absurd theater. With this cinematic reckoning with the Mullah regime, Panahi won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival last spring and is also France's candidate for the upcoming Oscars.
