Das KoKi zeigt im August: One to One: John & Yoko

In 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono moved from England to New York, where they spent the next 18 months living in a small apartment in Greenwich Village, immersing themselves in the counterculture, meeting artists and activists and using their popularity for peace policy issues. Above all, however, they spent a lot of time in front of the television. The move was supposed to be a kind of respite after the Beatles broke up in April 1970. At the same time, it was also a formative time of change for the couple, culminating in the "One to One" benefit concert at Madison Square Garden on August 30, 1972. Restored footage of this performance forms the heart of the film. Director Kevin MacDonald and his co-writer Sam Rice-Edwards embed this live footage in the political context of the United States with the Vietnam War, the re-election bid of US President Richard Nixon and the nationwide protest movement. In contrast, the Lennon & Ono apartment is recreated as faithfully as possible with the television screen as the focal point and at the same time as a window to the world - an effective play on the contrast between intimate everyday life and the endless stream of images from the TV set (although what the two really saw back then must remain speculation). The numerous phone calls that the couple made in this apartment at the time, which they meticulously recorded, prove to be as enlightening as they are amusing. An impressive spotlight on the lives of the two world-famous artists and their pop-cultural environment in the early 1970s.
