The dragon style became established in Norwegian architecture at the end of the 19th century. It owes its name to the projecting roof gables of the multi-storey wooden houses. The villa, in which the Borg family has lived for generations, is a jewel of this architectural style, and for "Sentimental Value" this setting is so indispensable that it is given its own narrative voice, which reports from off-screen how the rooms and their inhabitants live. The villa becomes an emotional minefield when Gustav Borg (Stellan Skarsgard) suddenly returns to his daughters' lives after his wife's funeral. Nora (Renate Reinsve) has never forgiven him for leaving the family, while her younger sister Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) is more forgiving. The father was once a famous director and has brought a screenplay about his mother's suicide, which he wants to film in real life. Nora, a celebrated stage actress, is to play the leading role. She brusquely rejects his offer, which is secretly a fatherly courtship. Gustav is forced to look for a new leading actress, but does not give up hope of Nora's participation. A drama about conflict-ridden family relationships combined with the hope that things will eventually turn out the way they are supposed to.
