The deaf-mute garbage man Shigeru finds a broken surfboard on his tour, repairs it and from then on tries to teach himself how to surf. He is supported by his girlfriend Takako, who is also deaf and mute. While the local surfers initially only laugh at him, Shigeru is not discouraged by his failures and the breaking of his board: He buys a new one from the surf store and makes the fateful acquaintance of its owner. Despite his tenacity, he remains an outsider and his disability repeatedly becomes his undoing.
A beautiful romantic film by the director of "Hana-Bi", which alludes to the transcendental nature of love that needs no words. With a soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi.
