What if you love with all your heart, but this love remains unfulfilled? In the collection of poems and songs "Vita Nova" (The New Life), the poet Dante gives an insight into his feelings for Beatrice. He fell madly in love at the age of nine, only saw Beatrice again at 18 and never met her again - before she died at the age of 24. Dante dedicated his life and all his writing to Beatrice: In his millennium book "The Divine Comedy", he follows her from hell through purgatory to paradise, where he meets her again, at least in fiction.
During his lifetime, Dante never confessed his love to Beatrice, and her early death leaves a painful gap. How do you deal with not having done something? We all know the hope of a second chance, of a new beginning. But how do you actually do that? Christopher Rüping and his ensemble approach the more than 700-year-old texts with this central question, retelling them, reliving them together. Love poems from the late Middle Ages meet pop songs from today. The result is a meeting place of delicate beauty and great power. A unique theatrical trip from earth to heaven and back - on the trail of true love and the big and small questions of life.
What can a new life be when the old one is no longer possible? How do we start anew? Where do we go from here? Beatrice may have an answer.
