DEALER Thomas Arslan D 1998 OmeU 74' "Strange how everything changes!" says the imprisoned small-time dealer Can (Tamer Yiğit) off-screen at the end. As if he doesn't know what has happened to him. He had gradually become aware of his situation: Abandoned by his girlfriend and daughter, observed by the police and strung along by his employer, he had finally decided to give up dealing and work as a kitchen assistant - only to soon return to selling drugs on the street. The second part of Arslan's Berlin trilogy shows Can's descent (with echoes of Bresson) without external drama, unsentimental and almost contemplative. A pronounced colour dramaturgy and close-ups of the protagonist in profile contribute to a certain stylization - far from depicting a milieu, the film uses minimalist means to describe a mental state produced by the milieu.
