The duo deBasement operates at the intersection of club culture and pop, with a sound that’s as accessible as it is defiant. Behind the project are Alli Logout, a singer from Los Angeles known for her work with the band Special Interest, and Margo XS, who was musically socialized in Montreal’s queer club scene. The two met through their shared label connections. The first two tracks—“FRONT LEFT SPEAKER” and “FTDJ (Thank God)”—released in 2024, already showcased the clear aesthetic vision of this newly formed dream team: minimalist structures, club-oriented energy, and a unique sense of drama. To accompany this striking debut statement, Alli Logout and Margo XS toured as the opening act for Model/Actriz and Marie Davidson. The name deBasement programmatically refers to the origin of this music: the basement—which can also be read as “cave” in French—describes the sheltered space of the underground studio, a place far from daylight and public scrutiny. At the same time, the name is a reference to the Pixies’ 1989 song “Debaser.” This dual meaning already makes clear what deBasement is all about: retreat and openness at the same time, pop as a form that emerges from the hidden and, perhaps precisely for that reason, holds the potential for larger stages.
