Too loud, too much, too stupid, nobody listens anymore, nobody is agile or open or in the least benevolent. Building Energy Act, German reason of state, agricultural diesel, immigration - there are many examples of the dysfunctional status quo of political communication, of the impossibility of forming an open public opinion. This is the general finding: the culture of debate in Germany is in a desolate state.
In their book "Defective Debates" (Suhrkamp), political scientist Julia Reuschenbach and radio journalist Korbinian Frenzel analyze our ability to debate. They organize the broad tableau of actors involved and examine who falls victim to which illusions. What defects the discourse system suffers from, what new challenges arise. Finally, they outline a way out of the misery in order to introduce ideas, solutions and concrete proposals for action.
Julia Reuschenbach and Korbinian Frenzel join Armin Nassehi and Micky Beisenherz to discuss whether and how we can regain our ability to debate.
