As part of the opening week of Rirkrit Tiravanija's exhibition DAS GLÜCK IST NICHT IMMER LUSTIG, I.U.D. will be playing at Tiravanija's demo station in the atrium of the Gropius Bau.
The drum duo I.U.D. - Lizzi Bougatsos (part of Gang Gang Dance) and Sadie Laska (ex-member of Growing, Extreme Violence) - combine industrial noise with shrill screams and complex drum beats. Their album The Proper Sex, which was described in the art magazine Artforum as "minimalist, infectious noise", has achieved cult status in the New York noise scene.
At the Gropius Bau, I.U.D. will be performing on a demo station by Rirkrit Tiravanija. The stage-like sculpture invites people to "demonstrate" something. Tiravanija understands the term in two senses - as a political protest or as a demonstration of something that someone is particularly good at or likes. For the duration of the exhibition, the demo station offers daily space for public performances.
In the 15 years of its existence, I.U.D. has performed at Performance Space New York, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Kunsthalle Zürich, David Zwirner Gallery and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, among others. They have collaborated with Kim Gordon and Spencer Sweeney and performed with OOIOO and The Royal Trux.
