Levin Watermeyer's life is the DIY store. He has always worked there, believes he knows all his colleagues and their quirks, their intrigues against - and affairs with - each other, and he is content. But then his comfortable world starts to crack. The DIY store is to expand, swallowing up competitors, and the inscrutable Pina Sommerfeldt, who is pursuing her own goals, has to be brought in. Watermeyer's world begins to totter and he starts to question everything. And then there is Gesine Wächter, who makes a pass at Ruiz, the boss and workaholic. He constantly increases the pressure to keep up with the performance - until environmentalists suspect a yellow-bellied toad biotope on the expansion site. With all plans at a standstill, the situation threatens to explode.

Denis Pfabe tells the story from the middle of the present: a German microcosm of colleagues and customers, from the doldrums of winter to the hustle and bustle of the season. People in the age of total commercialization, consumer and smart mentality and the upscaling of business models - a picture of our society, gripping, literarily original, at times wicked and very entertaining.

Denis Pfabe was born in Bonn in 1986, he is a trained retail salesman and studied media communication and journalism in Cologne. He is a graduate of the Bavarian Academy of Writing, was a scholarship holder of the Prose Writers' Workshop at the Literary Colloquium Berlin and received a working scholarship from the Kunststiftung NRW. Denis Pfabe lives in Bonn and drives a forklift truck in a DIY store three days a week. His highly acclaimed debut novel "Der Tag endet mit dem Licht" was published in 2018, followed by "Simonelli" in 2021. In 2024, he received the Deutschlandfunk Prize at the 48th Days of German-Language Literature in Klagenfurt.
