With revenues totaling EUR 5.7 billion in the 2020 European Championship year, UEFA is the financially strongest player in global sports event capitalism (by comparison: FIFA 2018 - World Cup in France - USD 2.9 billion, IOC 2020/2020 - 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, Winter Games in Beijing 2022 - USD 2.5 billion). UEFA generated EUR 2.5 billion from the 2020 European Championship alone. Due to the very liberal Swiss association law, UEFA, like all other major international sports associations based in Switzerland (IOC, FIFA), is subject to the same legal rules as small associations, which are primarily based on voluntary work. UEFA also claims these privileges in the countries in which the European Football Championships are held - including for the 2024 European Championships in Germany.
However, these privileges must be called into question in view of UEFA's development into a large corporation and the not inconsiderable amount of state services it receives (e.g. guaranteeing security). Using the tournament regulations for the European Championship 2024 as an example, we will examine how UEFA has managed to push through its profit-oriented business model and pass on all risks and costs to the organizing countries and municipalities.
