If you look up the word "godforsaken" in the dictionary, you will see a picture of the village of Güllen. Hardly a house has a tight roof, hardly a kerb is without a meter-deep hole, hardly a street lamp without a loose connection. The smell of sewage is everywhere, and the last factory closed its doors a long time ago. Those who can flee, do so, and those who can't, resign themselves. It seems as if Güllen's days are numbered when suddenly one afternoon a magnificent train pulls into the station, which has actually closed down. The outrageously wealthy Claire Zachanassian has returned home to save the village. She wants to donate a billion to the community, but only on one cruelly immoral condition.
