Harpagon is all about money. His avarice is astronomical, his humanity cannot even be guessed at. Harpagon's only lover is a money box carefully buried in the garden. With his pathological thriftiness, he tyrannizes his fellow human beings and poisons the climate around him. His children's marriage plans are also exploited to enforce his spending freeze.
Harpagon has promised his daughter Elise to the wealthy old man Anselme, while a rich widow is planned for his son Cléante. The marriages are to take place quickly and free of charge without any wedding celebrations. For himself, he has planned a marriage with the young, beautiful Marianne, who secretly loves Cléante. Then one day his beloved cassette disappears and Harpagon's life is thrown completely out of kilter.
