George Frideric Handel: Cantata "Clori, Tirsi e Fileno" HWV 96

Last year's Musikfest Atelier in Jever was dedicated to Giovanni Battista Bononcini, this year it is Georg Friedrich Händel. The Halle-born composer set off for Italy in 1706 after a stopover at the Gänsemarkt Opera in Hamburg. When he arrived in Rome, public opera performances were forbidden by papal decree. However, patrons from the nobility and clergy had long since had cantatas and oratorios performed in their palaces, which were veritable mini-operas. This also applies to the cantata "Clori, Tirsi e Fileno", in which the shepherdess Clori plays her game with Tirsi, who is devoted to her, and the light-footed Fileno. Whether passion and excitement or anger and despair, Handel's emotions were so effective that he later reused arias from this cantata for "Rinaldo", "Rodrigo", "Agrippina" and "Acis and Galatea". When Alfredo Bernardini and his team of teachers now dedicate themselves to this work with young musicians from all over the world, it will once again become clear why the young Handel quickly became an idolized favourite in the Eternal City.
