The two inmates Molina and Valentin share a prison cell. Molina, who is locked up because of his homosexuality, hopes to be released early. After all, he has agreed to spy on the left-wing radical Valentin and provide the prison guard with information. But over time, an intimate bond develops between the inmates and Molina, who falls in love with Valentin, finds himself caught in a conflict between personal freedom and comradely loyalty. Argentinian author Manuel Puig has written a touching melodrama that uses poetic images to tell a story about holding on to true humanity in violent systems of power.
