An auditor comes to town. What a black day for the town captain and his confidants, who all have some kind of dirt on them. Perhaps the government is pursuing a subtle plan? But here, beyond the capital, they are determined to face up to it. Measures are being taken to create a flawless impression in court, at the hospital, in the schools and on the streets. When the rumor mill reports that the auditor has been living among them unrecognized for two (!) weeks, the town captain is prepared to put everything - even his wife and daughter - on the line. The approach to the young man named Chlestakow, who is staying in a boarding house, develops into a hilarious constellation: an indebted survival artist is mistaken by everyone for the auditor and is thus inspired to play the man of the world with artistry, sex appeal and influence. He is most welcome to receive benefits of any kind.
Gogol's comedy from 1835 satirically exaggerates a group of influential people in a city society, revealing their corruptibility and corruptibility. The audience can look at this panopticon with pleasure, which Gogol takes great pleasure in scrutinizing critically!
