Nahid Persson Sarvestani's documentary "The Mullah's Son" recalls the fate of Iranian journalist Roohollah Zam.
Iranian journalist Roohollah Zam is forced to leave his homeland after defying the mullahs in his country. Although he himself comes from a deeply clerical family and accompanied his father to meetings with Supreme Leader Khamenei as a teenager, he increasingly became an opponent of the regime. With his news channel "Amadnews", which he founded in exile in France, he uncovered Iran's money laundering activities. Following death threats, Roohollah Zam is placed under the protection of the French security authorities.
In 2019, Swedish-Iranian director Nahid Persson Sarvestani began documenting his life in exile and started filming him in hiding. She also receives anonymous death threats. Despite all precautions, the Iranian regime succeeds in infiltrating Roohollah Zam's network and planting "moles" who gain his trust. Roohollah Zam is lured into a trap and abducted to Iran. After 14 months in prison, a forced confession and a show trial that Iranians can watch live on television, he is sentenced to death and executed.
