Two days before Thomas Bernhard's 95th birthday, the ÖSTER REICHT festival begins with Bernhard's text DER UNTERGEHER as a magnificent monologue by actor, director and pianist Christian Fries. He has developed a theatrical version of the novel that focuses on the text. He wants the audience to think about Thomas Bernhard and become entangled in these thoughts. What makes an existence succeed or fail? Why do people become lonely, why do they "perish"? An evening about competition, family entanglements, exaggerated ideals of life. An evening that brings Bernhard's rhythmic-musical language and his typical abysmally evil comedy to full fruition.
