Design your lamp

In the organizer's words:

Design your lamp is an explorative design and construction workshop by Laurin and Vincent as part of the pop-up waslangewert. The focus is on the interplay of light, form and material. The workshop invites you to creatively transform everyday materials or found objects and turn them into a functional lighting object with a personal signature.

What you can expect

This design workshop focuses on light - as a material, as a mood-setter and as a tool. Together we will explore how light can be directed, refracted, diffused and staged. The starting point is a simple technical basis consisting of a socket, cable and switch. From there, you will embark on a creative journey.

The focus is on process-based work: observing, trying out, discarding, thinking ahead. You will experiment with materials, shapes and surfaces and learn how small interventions can have a big impact. The aim is not to build a "finished lamp" as quickly as possible, but to develop an understanding of how light works - and how you can consciously shape this effect.

Personal initiative is expressly encouraged: you decide in which direction you want to go, which questions you want to pursue and how far you want to take your idea. At the end, you will take home a lighting object that you have designed yourself - but above all, you will take away new tools, ways of thinking and confidence in your own design process.

The workshop concept

  • Technical basis: E14 socket with plug and toggle switch incl. light source
  • Joint introduction to the topic of light: perception, effect, references
  • Brainstorming & exploration through sketches, material tests and simple prototypes
  • Open material pool: polypropylene sheets, wood, aluminum sheets, ropes, consumables and much more
  • 3D printing on site: Ideas can be designed, adapted and implemented directly
  • Bring Your Own Stuff: Your own found objects or materials are welcome and are actively integrated into the process
  • Tools & machines: Use of drill, jigsaw, pliers and assembly tools under supervision
  • Open design framework with room for individual approaches and solutions
  • Personal support & exchange during the entire workshop

No previous knowledge is required. The workshop is structured in such a way that you are introduced to designing with light step by step. The aim is to gain confidence in dealing with materials, tools and open questions - and the desire to change, rethink and reinterpret things yourself.
