THE BRIDGE OF MOSTAR
by Igor Memic
Stari Most - the Old Bridge has spanned the River Neretva since 1566 and connects the Catholic and Muslim parts of Mostar. Mina, Leyla and Sasha grow up in its shadow. Mili and Mina's love story begins on the day of the jump, when every year young men plunge from the bridge into the water, death-defying yet artistic. But then war suddenly bursts into the lives of the four friends and destroys the bridge along with their dreams for the future. Former neighbors become enemies and Mina, Mili, Leyla and Sasha fight for survival.
One moment you are dreaming of the future with your friends. And suddenly there is war.
Igor Memic tells the touching story of the Bosnian war and of four young people who are torn from their everyday lives and suddenly have bombs thrown at their homes. He also tells the story of how, despite the new reality, they try to wring the good things out of life and stick together, while all around them ethnic origin suddenly determines who is allowed to live and who should die.
Fabian Gerhardt directs Igor Memić's play with 4th year drama students from the Berlin University of the Arts. With their irrepressible energy, they bring the five protagonists to life and show what it means when a war tears people from life forever.
