Pierre Borel, Louis Laurain, Antonio Borghini and Hannes Lingens have been working together as Die Hochstapler since 2011. The quartet's collective and egalitarian way of working is reflected in a joy of playing that is transferred to the audience from the very first moment. The jointly composed pieces are reassembled live, conventions are renegotiated and agreements are put to the test. An unconditional love of experimentation is just as much a part of the concept as tongue-in-cheek references to jazz history.

For their new program, Die Hochstapler have taken on the quotes from Thelonious Monk that Steve Lacy wrote down as "Monk's Advice". Calls such as "Let's lift the bandstand!", "You got to dig it to dig it, you dig?" and "Always know" are taken literally, metaphorically decoded and examined for their compositional form. The resulting performance template, like a flexible set of rules, allows for ever new arrangements. The examination of Thelonious Monk's music and personality has an effect on the sound of the impostors and vice versa. The result is music that does not deny tradition, but interprets it as a history of experimentation.

The Impostors have played at festivals including Moers, Météo, Jazzfest Berlin and the Donaueschinger Musiktage. Their music is documented on five albums.
