The Mölln Letters
Documentary film | Germany 2025 | 96 min. | FSK 12
In November 1992, the racist arson attack in Mölln destroyed the lives of İbrahim Arslan and his family. Seven-year-old İbrahim survived the attack, but lost his sister, his cousin and his grandmother.
After the attack, the town of Mölln received hundreds of letters with expressions of solidarity from the local population. But for almost three decades, these letters remained unnoticed - and unknown to those affected. The film follows İbrahim Arslan as he discovers these letters and meets three of their authors.
At the same time, "The Mölln Letters" paints a vivid portrait of the enduring trauma that İbrahim and his siblings still experience today. While İbrahim has found a way to actively fight against racism and advocate for a culture of remembrance that focuses on the victims, his brother Namik is still at the beginning of his own process of coming to terms with the trauma.
The film not only sheds light on the experiences of the survivors, but also makes visible the great solidarity that already existed at the time - a solidarity that the victims were unaware of for a long time. It builds a bridge between past and present and opens up a perspective of remembrance that gives space, dignity and recognition to the voices of those affected.
