Soccer is sport, politics, commerce and soccer is pop. Club songs, pop songs, simple sing-along rhymes and ambitious art form the soundtrack to the big game. Songs and chants are an essential part of soccer culture, reflecting the cross-border fascination with the game. The flair of major tournaments is often associated with music in the collective memory (see "Football's Coming Home" in 1996 or "Sweet Caroline" at the 2022 European Women's Championship).

Author Gunnar Leue has written a rousing, detailed and humorous history of soccer music. In his book "You'll Never Sing Alone. Wie Musik in den Fußball kam" (You'll Never Sing Alone. How Music Came into Football), he traces the rise of soccer as a global entertainment spectacle: from the bizarre beginnings of fan support to singing soccer stars and the emergence of club anthems to the Ultras' protest against commercialism and eventization. In 90 minutes, Gunnar Leue takes us on a rocking tour around the world, with videos and soccer records from all over the world. These include rare shellac recordings of soccer songs by singers from the Leipzig Kristallpalast variety show from the 1920s. The fascinating journey through over 150 years of soccer music history, peppered with historical images, ludicrous anecdotes and rare record covers, ultimately leads to the realization: without its accompanying music, soccer would not have its unique radiance.
