Czechoslovakian director Juraj Herz's fascinating fairy tale adaptation from 1978 is a dark reinterpretation of the classic motif of "Beauty and the Beast". The story revolves around the courageous Juliet, who sacrifices herself and goes to a mysterious, enchanted castle to save her father's life. There she encounters an inscrutable, bird-like monster that oscillates between animal violence and human longing and is transformed over time by Julia's love.

Herz's film impresses with its morbid, atmospheric staging and poetic imagery, which immerses the fairy tale in a garment of gothic romance and psychological depth. With atmospheric settings, outstanding music by Petr Hapka and mesmerizing images, a fantastic world is created that evokes fear and compassion in equal measure.

Beauty and the Beast is a highlight of Czech genre cinema: disturbing, sensual and at the same time powerfully told. A movie for everyone who loves fairy tales, mystery and surreal horror.
