DIE SCHÖNHEITSKÖNIGIN - Gastspiel des Künstlerkollektivs DIY Theater (Charkiw, Ukraine)

In the organizer's words:

A black chamber play about loneliness, dependency and the desperate desire for love.

In a remote house in the west of Ireland, two women live in a fragile balance of closeness and violence, care and control: an ageing mother and her adult daughter. Their daily lives are characterized by small rituals, unspoken reproaches and the silent fear of remaining alone.

When the possibility of a different life suddenly appears - love, freedom, an escape from confinement - this fragile system begins to totter. What begins as hope develops into a relentless power struggle in which dependency, guilt, fear and longing become inextricably intertwined.

"The Beauty Queen" tells the story of people who want to love but cannot let go. Of relationships that provide support - and destroy at the same time. Of the cruelty of closeness and the loneliness that arises when no one remains.

The artist collective DIY Theater from Kharkiv is an independent theater founded in Ukraine in 2015. Since the beginning of the war, the members of the ensemble have been living in various European countries. Nevertheless, the theater continues to work - in digital rehearsals, international residencies and joint guest performances.

For the ensemble, theater becomes a form of resistance against silencing: as a space in which one can continue to speak, feel and act despite war, exile and separation.

This production combines the psychological precision of McDonagh's text with the existential experience of a generation whose lives are characterized by loss, rupture and uncertainty - and makes the play a highly topical, moving evening of theater.
