1962: Johannes Leinert travels with his doctoral supervisor to a physics conference at the Hotel Esplanade in the Swiss Alps. An Iranian scientist is to give a groundbreaking lecture on quantum mechanics. But the speaker, who is expected to deliver nothing less than a theory of everything, is late and the high society passes the time with witty dinner parties and elegant ski trips. When one of the physicists dies in a monstrous manner, two investigators appear on the scene, suspecting murder. While bizarre cloud formations appear in the sky, Johannes gets on the trail of a secret that has taken root deep beneath the mountain.
The film cleverly plays with genre boundaries and tells an atmospheric story in grandiose images and with a great deal of love for the profession. In a style somewhere between Hitchcock's great crime classics and David Lynch's thrillers, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING proves that crime thrillers can be more than just solid predictability in practice.
