Writer Paul Javal (Michel Piccoli) is hired to revise the script of a film project that has stalled. As the producer is not satisfied with Fritz Lang's (played by himself) realization of the material, Paul is asked to rewrite some scenes. After a meeting in Cinecittà, the producer invites the author and his attractive wife Camille (the incomparable Brigitte Bardot) to his villa. Because Paul does nothing to stop the producer's advances, Camille believes he would even give up his wife for his career. And so love turns to contempt ...
Jean-Luc Godard's great classic starring Michel Piccoli, Brigitte Bardot and Fritz Lang (!) is a complex, engaging reflection on filmmaking and the world of cinema, dealing above all with the conflict between entertainment as commerce and artistic independence as intellectual denial.
