Housekeeper Katharina Blum knowingly or unknowingly helps a wanted (alleged) terrorist, with whom she has fallen in love, to escape and thus gets caught up in a police investigation and in the headlines of the sensational press. Three days, in the middle of the Cologne Carnival, lie between the young woman's arrest and a murder, during which the small, uneventful world of the simple domestic worker falls apart and becomes the focus of a sensationalist public.
