Democrat - trade unionist - resistance fighter

Wilhelm Leuschner: Who was this man from the social democratic underground trade union with links to the military resistance? How is resistance possible in an all-encompassing dictatorship? A question that still arises in many countries today.

The production shows how, under the rule of the National Socialists, a single man - Wilhelm Leuschner - built up an extensive network throughout Germany without the modern-day possibilities of digital communication, which served as the basis for the assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944.

Leuschner was the heart and brain of the underground social democratic trade union, in conjunction with the military resistance around Stauffenberg and other liberal trade unionists, with whom he planned a large united trade union. As head of the underground trade union, he was intended to be Vice-Chancellor in a new government after Hitler's death.

Jan Uplegger, Yumiko Tsubaki (violin) and Maria Hinze (piano) present an exciting staged performance of the impressive life of a man who was one of the most committed defenders of German democracy during the National Socialist era.

In a subsequent panel discussion with, among others, Lutz Bock (Trade Union Secretary of the DGB Bremen) and Martin Günthner (Chairman of the SPD Bremerhaven), the topicality of Wilhelm Leuschner's work will be questioned. Dr. Marion Salot, management consultant of the Bremen Chamber of Employees, will welcome the audience.
