In the organizer's words:
Opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder
Prince Tamino has lost his way while hunting and finds himself in great danger. He is rescued at the last second by the three ladies of the Queen of the Night. The three are smitten by the young man's beauty and immediately set off to tell their mistress about the young man. The queen chooses the unknown prince to free her kidnapped daughter Pamina from the hands of Sarastro. As a reward, she promises him Pamina as his wife. Tamino is given a magic flute to protect him from the dangers of his mission and, together with the clumsy bird-catcher Papageno, embarks on the adventure of a lifetime.
With his last stage work, Mozart left behind one of his most complex creations. In a mixture of folk play and fairy tale, it combines the philosophical and the fantastic and is characterized by the humanistic ideals of the Enlightenment; wisdom instead of superstition, tolerance instead of prejudice and man's journey to a better self.
Throughout its history, no opera has been interpreted in as many different and contradictory ways as "The Magic Flute". At the same time, it has consistently remained at the top of the opera charts and is still the epitome of opera for young and old alike.
