TO THE EXHIBITION
The fans shout in chorus: "We want our place in the sun too!" Kick-off: Europe!
The Congo Conference, also known as the West Africa Conference or Berlin Conference, took place in Berlin from November 15, 1884 to February 26, 1885 at the invitation of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. It was convened to regulate freedom of trade in the Congo and Niger. The result was the "Congo Act", which served as the basis for the division of Africa into colonies in the so-called "Race for Africa". This created borders that led to the enforced separation of established communities, peoples and kingdoms, which in turn is seen as one of the main causes of the political instability in large parts of Africa that continues to this day.

The exhibition Freistoß 1884 is an artistic examination of the historic Congo Conference of 1884, which drove the division of Africa among the European colonial powers. A video by artists Philip Kojo Metz, Eugenio Merino and the Activist Art Collective INDECLINE will form the centerpiece of the installation at the Köşk, in which they explore this significant event. Inspired by previous joint works in which political figures such as Trump, Putin and Bolsonaro were addressed, in this video they focus on a central event in German colonial history. The video is accompanied by musical contributions from Ghanaian musician Dela Botri and Munich musician Roger Rekless.

The installation in Köşk, which is based on the aesthetics of a clubhouse, is flanked by earlier works by the artists and invites visitors to discuss complex historical and social issues such as colonialism and political power imbalances in an accessible way that goes beyond soccer - sometimes polemically, sometimes humorously and subtly. The complementary (spoken word) concerts on July 5 will create exciting references and space for critical reflection in the context of the major social event of the European Championship:

July 5, 2024, from 7:30 pm - Wor(l)d Connects & Öku-Büro present:
8 pm Omar Musa & Mariel Roberts - spoken word concert
9 pm Audry Funk & DJ Kuto Quilla - Socio-critical-feminist hip hop & Latin sounds

The exhibition takes place as part of the DINGDANGDÖNG - Die großen Fußball = Kunst Festspiele from 7 June to 14 July 2024, organized by Färberei, Köşk and Glockenbachwerkstatt e.V. The entire program of the festival, with different venues throughout Munich, can be found here.
