The concert opens with Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 95 - the shortest and only one in a minor key among the twelve London Symphonies. Once underestimated, it nevertheless reveals the sovereign compositional maturity of the almost sixty-year-old composer. This is followed by Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor - the witty concertante debut of the twenty-something composer, unusually scored for solo trumpet and strings. It brings a reunion with the world-famous pianist Lilya Zilberstein and gives Aleksey Shust, the deputy principal trumpeter of the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, the opportunity to perform as a soloist. The work sparkles with wit, quotations and parodies - including of Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven. The latter's Symphony No. 2 in D major breathes exuberant confidence in life despite the composer's inner struggles and thus fills the second part of the concert.
